The Kodungallur Bharani festival is one of Kerala’s most famous and unique temple celebrations and the Ashwathi Kavu Theendal marks its grand culmination. Celebrated at the Kodungallur Sree Kurumba Bhagavathi Temple in Thrissur district, the festival begins on the Bharani day of Kumbham month and concludes on the Bharani day of Meenam month. Ashwathi Kavu TheendalKodungallur Sree Kurumba Bagavathi Temple Thrissur Kerala It is renowned for its vibrant expression of fierce devotion where rituals, songs and dances reflect the deep spiritual fervor of the devotees. The main events are performed from Thiruvonam day in Meenam month through Ashwathi day with the temple remaining open throughout the day for devotees to witness the elaborate rituals. Witnessing these ceremonies is believed to bring relief from suffering and blessings from the Goddess. Historically, Kodungallur was a Dravidian temple and the festival originated from the participation of the Dravidian communities who had traditional rights in the temple. One of the unique aspects of Bharani is the singing of explicit devotional songs in the temple courtyard by devotees, a tradition that commemorates the Shiva ganas dancing to appease Goddess Bhadrakali’s anger after she defeated the demon Darika. The festival also honors the heroic woman Kannaki, who in her grief over her husband’s death, demonstrated her unwavering courage.

The festival sees active participation from various communities such as Kudumbis, Pulayars, Arayars, Vallons and Velans, each contributing to the rituals in their traditional ways. Thiruvonam day features offerings of drums and cymbals followed by the Kozhikkallu Mooda ritual by the Thacholi family of Malabar which includes offering a rooster atop red cloth. On Revathi day, devotees perform kalamezhuthu songs and play traditional wind instruments. The highlight of the festival is Ashwathi Kavu Theendal celebrated on Ashwathi day. At 11:00 AM, the temple is closed from the north side for the secret ritual “Thrichandanacharth” after which the Kodungallur Thampuran raises the temple flag marking the beginning of Kav Theendal. Young men wearing copper anklets perform acrobatic dances with swords and cymbals while devotees beat the temple’s copper roof with bamboo sticks and complete three circumambulations in a spirited display of devotion. Dried shrimp prasadam is then distributed to the devotees. Following Kav Theendal, the temple remains closed for seven days during which devotees can still offer prayers at the sanctum inside the pallimadam. The festival prominently features Dravidian style rituals highlighting the deep connection between the Goddess and local traditions.
