Peruvanam Arattupuzha Pooram Kodiyettam at Thiruvullakkavu Sree Dharma Shastha Temple is an important ceremonial event that marks the beginning of the sacred traditions connected with the renowned Arattupuzha Pooram one of the oldest and most culturally significant temple festivals in Kerala.
The ceremony is conducted with great devotion and reverence reflecting the deep rooted spiritual heritage of the region and the strong connection between temples that participate in this historic celebration.
The Kodiyettam is a symbolic ritual that formally announces the commencement of the Pooram-related observances. At Thiruvullakkavu Temple which is dedicated to Lord Dharma Shastha, this event holds special importance because the temple has a traditional role in the sequence of rituals associated with the Peruvanam–Arattupuzha Pooram festivities. Devotees, temple authorities and representatives from participating temples gather at the temple premises to witness and take part in the ceremony. The raising of the sacred flag represents the invocation of divine blessings and the beginning of a spiritually charged period of temple rituals and community participation.
One of the distinctive traditions associated with this ceremony is the ritual offering known as “Paattu Enna” As part of this age old custom, a symbolic offering of sacred oil is ceremonially presented from Thiruvullakkavu Temple to the temples that participate in the Pooram festival. Traditionally, offerings are made for the participating temples, emphasizing the unity and collective devotion that define the Arattupuzha Pooram tradition. This ritual reflects the longstanding spiritual bonds between temples and highlights the cooperative nature of temple festivals in Kerala.
The Kodiyettam ceremony is conducted in the presence of priests, temple officials and large numbers of devotees who gather to seek blessings and witness the sacred proceedings. The temple premises become vibrant with devotional activities, prayers and the rhythmic sounds of traditional temple instruments.
