Makara Vilakku Utsavam is one of the most significant and vibrant festivals celebrated at Anthimahakalankavu Temple in Thrissur, Kerala.
Observed annually on Makara Sankranti, this festival attracts devotees from across the state and even from other parts of India, who come to seek the blessings of the deity and participate in the sacred rituals. The festival is marked by a series of religious ceremonies, cultural programs, and traditional offerings that showcase the rich heritage and spiritual fervor of Kerala.
The festivities begin with Ganapathi Homam a ritual invoking Lord Ganesha for the removal of obstacles followed by Neyyabhishekam where the deity is bathed with ghee symbolizing purity and prosperity. Devotees also witness Chandanacharthu, the ceremonial application of sandalwood paste on the idol, and Pushpa Alankaram, the beautiful floral decoration of the sanctum sanctorum enhancing the temple’s spiritual ambiance. One of the highlights of the festival is Annadanam where free meals are served to devotees reflecting the temple’s tradition of generosity and community service.
Throughout the day, Bhajans and devotional songs fill the temple premises creating an atmosphere of devotion and serenity. As the evening approaches, the temple is illuminated with Chuttuvilakku, a circumambulatory offering of lamps, transforming the temple into a glowing spectacle. The festival also features Deeparadhana, a ceremonial lamp offering performed by renowned artists and concludes with fireworks adding a celebratory charm to the spiritual proceedings.
