The Thiruvutsava Mahamaham at Cheekamundy Sree Mahavishnu Temple in Thrissur is one of the most significant and vibrant temple festivals in Kerala celebrated with devotion, grandeur and traditional fervor.
This festival brings together devotees from all over the state as well as visitors from across the country to witness the exquisite rituals, cultural programs and spiritual activities that have been preserved through centuries.
The festival features a wide range of religious ceremonies beginning with the sacred flag hoisting marking the official commencement of the celebrations. Each day of the festival is dedicated to specific rituals including elaborate poojas, abhishekams and offerings to Lord Mahavishnu. Traditional performances such as Pongala where women devotees prepare a special offering in a ceremonial hearth and Kalam Pattu, a ritualistic song and floor art presentation are highlights that attract enthusiastic participation.
A central feature of the Thiruvutsava Mahamaham is the Kalabhabishekam, a sacred ritual invoking divine blessings for prosperity and protection followed by Utsavabali, the grand offering to the deity. Devotees also witness the Pallivetta, a ceremonial hunt symbolizing the destruction of evil culminating in the Aarattu procession where the deity is taken for a holy dip in the temple tank amidst traditional music and rituals.
