The Sri Lalithopakhyanam Navaha Kathakathana Yajnam at Churakkottukavu Sree Durga Devi Temple in Thrissur is a spiritually enriching nine day festival dedicated to the divine Goddess Lalitha Tripura Sundari. This festival is centered around the sacred recitation and storytelling of the Lalithopakhyanam, one of the most revered texts in Shakta tradition which narrates the divine exploits of the Goddess, her victories over various demons, and her interactions with other deities of the Hindu pantheon. Each day of the festival is meticulously planned with a series of rituals, homams, and poojas that highlight specific chapters and themes from the scripture providing devotees an immersive experience in the spiritual and philosophical teachings of the text.

The festival begins each day with Ganapathi Homam, Lalitha Pooja and Grantha Pooja followed by the recitation of the Lalitha Sahasranama. The storytelling sessions known as Kathakathana continue throughout the day and explore profound topics such as the pilgrimage of Sage Agastya, the divine manifestations of Lord Hayagriva, the defeat of demons like Bhandasura, and the divine marriage of Lalitha and Kameshwara. Special rituals including Shanti Homam, Durva Homam and Trishati Homam are performed to remove obstacles purify the mind and body and bless devotees with spiritual merit, prosperity and well being. Each day also includes dedicated offerings, archana and homams for specific aspects such as children’s education, courage, family harmony and success in endeavors.
