Kottipparakkal Pooram is one of the most vibrant and anticipated temple festivals in Thrissur, held annually at Sree Veerasthanam Viruttanam Bhagavathi Temple, a revered shrine dedicated to the goddess who is considered the origin and protector of all beings.
The festival is celebrated with grandeur and devotion bringing together thousands of devotees from across Kerala to witness the unique blend of spiritual rituals, cultural performances and traditional art forms.
The festival showcases the rich heritage of Kerala’s temple traditions with elephants adorned in golden caparisons forming a majestic procession through the temple grounds and surrounding areas. The rhythmic beats of Panchavadyam, a traditional orchestra combining five types of instruments, fill the air creating an atmosphere of divine energy and festive excitement. Alongside, performers skilled in classical and folk art forms, including dance, percussion, and ceremonial music, entertain and inspire devotees blending devotion with artistic expression.
Preparations for the Pooram begin weeks in advance with temple authorities and local committees organizing rituals, arranging decorations and coordinating various performances. The festival also features traditional rituals like Palliyunarthal, special poojas and offerings allowing devotees to seek blessings and participate actively in the celebrations.
