Karthika Vela at Palakkal Bhagavathi Temple in Varavoor, Thrissur is one of the most vibrant and eagerly anticipated temple festivals in Kerala. Celebrated annually in the Malayalam month of Kumbham, this festival draws devotees and visitors from across the region to participate in its grand rituals and cultural programs. The celebrations typically begin in the evening with Parapurappad, a ceremonial procession that marks the start of the festivities featuring beautifully decorated elephants and traditional musical ensembles.
One of the highlights of the festival is the Panchavadyam, a classical temple orchestra performed with five traditional instruments including maddalam, thimila, ilathalam, kombu and kuzhal. This energetic musical performance is complemented by Thayambaka, a highly skilled percussion solo, which mesmerizes audiences with its intricate rhythms and synchronization. Devotees also participate in Kaivilakku, the lamp-lighting ceremony which illuminates the temple premises and creates a sacred and festive ambiance.
The festival includes a variety of cultural programs staged in and around the temple. Classical and semi classical dance performances, music concerts and folk art displays showcase the rich artistic heritage of Kerala. The evenings are filled with Kombu and Kuzhal performances, blending music and devotion in a spectacular display of rhythm and harmony. Special endowments and awards are presented during the festival to honor accomplished artists highlighting the community’s dedication to preserving traditional art forms.
Throughout the two day celebration, devotees offer prayers participate in processions and enjoy the vibrant decorations and illuminated pandals.
