ചോവല്ലൂർ ശിവക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ തിരുവാതിര മഹോത്സവവും ദശലക്ഷ ദീപോത്സവവും ഡിസംബർ-ജനുവരി മാസങ്ങളിൽ 12 ദിവസങ്ങളിലായി ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു.

Thiruvathira in the month of Dhanu (Malayalam calender) is Siva's Birthday. Sathi devi died. As Siva was in anger, he went to Tapas. By that time deeds of Thaarakasuran (a deamon) became un-bearable. It was prophcey that only Siva's son will be able to kill this daemon. Siva is in Tapas mode.
He need to be out of it, as world badly needs Subramaniyan. So devas planned and sent Kamadevan. Kamadevan worked to his best. But all that was in vain. He became victim of Siva's anger as siva was disturbed.
Siva opened his 3rd eye and burnt kamadevan into ashes. As time passed away Parvathi devi was born as Himavan's daughter, grew up n fell in love with Siva. Siva came in various forms and told parvathy that Siva is not a good match for her as he wears animal skin, has snake around his neck. But parvathy was obstinate that she will marry only siva... Atlast Siva himself came infront of her and they got married. The Lord pardoned kamadevan, on request of Sree Parvati and Rathidevi, later and he re incarnated Kamadevan on the very same day. Parvathy devi's friends went to forest and pluck some flowers and gave her. That is what is known as dasa pushpam. Parvathy devi was too happy declared that "Whoever observes fasting and offers prayers to Siva on this particular day will have good husband, children & live long together. Dhanu month Thiruvathira is special for the newly wedded couple. First thiruvathira after the marriage of a girl is called Poothiruvathira.
Thiruvathira Mahotsavam and Dashalaksha Deepotsavam 2025 | Chowalloor Sivakshethram Thrissur
Ten Lakh lamps will be lit in the temple for the Dashalaksha Deepotsavam. During the Thiruvathira Mahotsavam the temple will be decorated with lamps and flowers. Ladies will take vrutham (eat only vegetables and take bath early in the morning and visit temple)and will offer prayer for getting
good husband and children and married ladies for good married life. Vilakkezhunellip and poojas will be conducted on all the eleven days. The twelfth day is the most important day and the concluding day of the festival. Pattum Thaliyum Charthal for Goddess Parvathy is an important program in the festival. With hours long panchavadyam and ezhunellip the festival for the year will come to an end.
