Meena Bharani at the Kodungallur Sree Kurumbakkavu Temple is one of the most intense, vibrant and spiritually charged temple festivals in Kerala deeply rooted in ancient traditions and devotional practices dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathi.
Revered as a powerful manifestation of the Divine Mother, the deity is believed to embody fierce protection, justice and the destruction of evil drawing thousands of devotees from across the region.
The festival is especially known for its unique rituals and strong expressions of devotion that set it apart from other temple celebrations. One of the most remarkable aspects is the participation of oracles known as Velichappadus who enter into a trance-like state and perform ritualistic dances while wielding swords. These sacred performances are believed to channel the divine presence of the goddess symbolizing her power and blessings upon the devotees.
Another distinctive feature of Meena Bharani is the tradition of devotees singing devotional songs often in a raw and uninhibited form, as an offering to the goddess.
