Arattupuzha Pooram is one of the most ancient and culturally significant temple festivals of Kerala celebrated with great splendour at the Arattupuzha Sree Sastha Temple in Thrissur district. Revered as the “Mother of all Poorams” this festival has a history that spans centuries and holds a unique place among Kerala’s traditional temple celebrations. The temple is dedicated to Lord Sastha, who is worshipped here as a powerful guardian deity and the Pooram is conducted with strict adherence to age old rituals and customs.
The most remarkable feature of this festival is the grand assembly of deities. A total of 23 deities from prominent temples in and around Thrissur arrive at Arattupuzha in a majestic ceremonial procession. Each deity is mounted on a beautifully adorned elephant and accompanied by vibrant traditional percussion performances. The rhythmic beats of chenda, ilathalam, kombu and kuzhal create a spiritually charged atmosphere drawing thousands of devotees and art lovers to the village.
Arattupuzha Pooram is not just a visual spectacle but also a deeply spiritual event. The rituals begin early in the day with special poojas and offerings at the temple. As the processions progress, devotees witness Kudamattam where colourful ceremonial umbrellas are rhythmically exchanged atop the elephants, symbolising prosperity and celebration. Fireworks light up the night sky adding grandeur to the festivities while maintaining the traditional style unique to this Pooram.
The festival reaches its spiritual climax with the sacred Arattu ceremony in which the deities are ceremonially taken for a holy bath in a nearby water body. This ritual signifies purification and renewal marking the conclusion of the Pooram celebrations. Beyond rituals and processions, Arattupuzha Pooram stands as a living symbol of Kerala’s cultural heritage, showcasing classical art forms, community harmony and unwavering devotion.
