Thrikkur Mahadeva Cave Temple is an ancient and remarkable shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva admired for its unique rock cut design and deep spiritual atmosphere. The temple is carved entirely into a massive rocky hill making it one of the finest examples of cave style temple architecture in Kerala. Instead of being built above the ground with traditional materials, the sanctum and surrounding chamber were sculpted directly from natural stone creating a sacred space that feels both powerful and timeless.
At the center of the cave sits a tall, self manifested Shiva Linga formed from the natural rock. The presence of the linga inside the cave gives the shrine an intense sense of energy and sanctity. A fascinating feature is the small natural waterhole above the sanctum that never dries up, regardless of the season. This continuous presence of water has long been considered a divine sign associated with the temple.
The cave chamber itself is spacious enough to accommodate devotees, with smooth rock walls and a naturally cool interior.
The entrance and the passage into the cave are designed in a way that maintains the simplicity and purity associated with early temple traditions. The main sanctum faces north which is unusual for Shiva temples and devotees traditionally worship the deity from the left side following an ancient ritual practice.
Around the cave, several architectural elements were added over the centuries such as the mandapam supported by stone pillars and paved rock platforms that enhance the temple’s structure while preserving its original cave form. Sculptures and carvings within the cave reflect a blend of artistic skill and devotional expression.

Annual Thiruvutsavam
The Annual Festival at Thrikkur Mahadeva Cave Temple is the most significant celebration of the year. This multi day event is typically held over about 8 days usually between January and February according to the Malayalam calendar.
Panjagavya Abhishekam
As part of the temple’s special observances, Panchagavya Abhishekam is conducted during auspicious times. In this ritual, a mixture of five sacred substances from cows are poured over the Shiva Linga, accompanied by mantras and chants.
Illam Nira
Illam Nira is another special ritual associated with the temple, typically observed in the Malayalam month of Karkidakam.
