The main deity is a fierce form of young Lord Krishna, worshipped soon after the slaughter of the demon Bakasura. This demon, the brother of Poothana, attempted to kill Lord Krishna by transforming into a bird and swallowing him. Using his supreme power, Lord Krishna melted the demon's inner parts and emerged, tearing the bird-shaped body into two parts.

The temple, more than 1200 years old, was originally the private property of the Koodallur Muthedathu Mana. A statue of Lord Krishna, initially worshipped in the Illam , was enshrined in this temple after a beautiful structure was builted.
