Pananchery Mudikkode Shiva Temple is a historic and revered Hindu temple believed to be one of the 108 Shiva temples established by Lord Parashurama, it holds the 11th position among these sacred shrines. The temple is renowned for its spiritual significance, ancient traditions, and unique architectural features that reflect the rich heritage of Kerala’s temple culture.
The temple is situated on the Thrissur–Palakkad route, approximately 12 kilometers northeast of Thrissur city, making it easily accessible for devotees and visitors alike. Historically, it is associated with the Chera dynasty, as it is located near Vellanikkavu, an important ancient city. According to local legends, Lord Shiva, who was once trapped in the fort of Banasura at Paravu, was eventually freed and arrived at Munikkadavu (present-day Mudikkode). The remnants of a fort can still be seen on nearby Vellani Hill, serving as a reminder of this divine story.
One of the temple’s most distinctive features is its west-facing Shiva Lingam, and the deity, Lord Parameshwara, is depicted in a meditative posture, which is considered unique and highly revered by devotees. The temple has a long-standing tradition of spiritual practices, including daily poojas, abhishekam, and special offerings by devotees seeking blessings for prosperity, health, and protection from negativity.
Festivals at the temple are celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm, particularly Maha Shivaratri, when the temple pond is said to overflow and flow eastward, adding to the spiritual ambiance. Over the centuries, the temple was under the patronage of local kings and is now administered by the Cochin Devaswom Board, ensuring the preservation of its rituals and heritage. Surrounded by lush greenery and a tranquil atmosphere, Pananchery Mudikkode Shiva Temple is not just a place of worship but also a center of cultural and spiritual significance. Festivals
The Temple has a number of festivals. The important ones are :
Maha Shivaratri
This is the most significant festival of the temple, celebrated with great devotion in the Malayalam month of Kumbham (February–March). Devotees observe fasts, offer special prayers, and participate in night-long vigils. The temple pond is traditionally said to overflow eastwards on this day, adding a mystical element to the celebrations.
Pradosham
Observed twice every lunar month, Pradosham is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Special poojas are conducted during the evening twilight, and devotees perform rituals seeking the Lord’s blessings for the removal of obstacles, prosperity, and spiritual growth.
Thiruvathira
Celebrated during the Malayalam month of Dhanu (December–January), this annual festival involves elaborate rituals, special abhishekam, and cultural programs. Devotees from nearby villages and towns gather in large numbers to participate in the festive processions and offerings.
