Kodungallur Bhagavathy Temple Thrissur

Kodungallur Bhagavathy Temple is located in Kodungallur, Thrissur District, Kerala, India.

The temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali, a form of Mahakali also known as Sri Kurumba.Kodungallur Bhagavathy Temple is one of the oldest functioning temples in India and holds significant reverence in Kerala. The goddess is depicted in her fierce (ugra) form, facing north, with eight hands holding various attributes. The western chamber of the inner temple houses the Sapthamatrukas Brahmi, Vaishnavi, Maheshwari, Indrani, Varahi, Kaumari, and Chamunda, all facing north.

Idols of Ganapathi and Veerabhadra are also present, facing east and west, respectively. Additionally, a small stone structure called the Samadhi of Vysoori sits to the left of the temple, serving as a shrine for a deity associated with smallpox, chickenpox, mumps, and other contagious diseases.

Festivals

The Temple has a number of festivals. The important ones are :

Bharani Festival

The Bharani festival at Kodungallur Bhagawati Temple is one of the major festivals in Kerala, celebrated with great fervor. The month-long festivities begin from the Bharani asterism in the month of Kumbham and continue until seven days after the Bharani asterism in the month of Meenam, typically falling between March and April. The festival usually commences with the ritual Kozhikkallu moodal, which involves offering cocks over red clothes to the deity.

Thalappoli Festival

The Thalappoli festival at Kodungallur Bhagawati Temple is celebrated in the month of Makaram (January-February), commencing from the evening of Makara Sankranthi with religious rituals. The four-day festival features a grand procession led by richly caparisoned elephants, accompanied by traditional music forms like Pancha Vadyam, Paancari, and Paandi, and is celebrated by all sections of people from Kodungallur and surrounding areas. The first day of Thalappoli is particularly significant for the Kudumbi community, descendants of Konkan puthri Kannaki Devi, who perform the Suvasini/Suhasini pooja with many offerings to the goddess.
