The temple is dedicated to Lord Sastha, who is the principal deity worshipped here. Unique to this temple, Lord Sastha is also revered in the form of Brihaspati the divine preceptor and guru of the gods in Hindu mythology.
Kanimangalam Sastha holds a significant and honored place in the world-famous Thrissur Pooram festival, one of the largest and most spectacular temple festivals in Kerala. During this grand event, Kanimangalam Sastha is the first Pooram deity to enter the Vadakkunnathan Temple, symbolizing the commencement of the festival rituals. It is believed that Sastha serves as the guardian and protector of all the goddesses who participate in the Thrissur Pooram procession.
The deity’s role extends beyond mere participation being the first to arrive, Sastha inspects and ensures that all arrangements and facilities for the other deities and their devotees are in place, reflecting the temple's tradition of hospitality and protection.

Thrissur Pooram
The temple plays a central role in the world-famous Thrissur Pooram, held annually at Vadakkunnathan Temple.
Kanimangalam Sastha is the first deity to enter Vadakkunnathan Temple, symbolically starting the festival.
The deity also acts as the protector of all participating goddesses, ensuring the smooth conduct of the festival.
Devotees gather in large numbers to witness the majestic processions, traditional percussion ensembles (Chenda Melam), and spectacular temple fireworks.
Sastha Jayanthi
Celebrated to mark the birth of Lord Sastha, this festival includes special poojas, rituals, and devotional music. Devotees observe fasting and participate in early morning prayers to seek blessings of wisdom and protection.
Mandala Pooja
During the Mandala season (approx. 41 days, usually Nov–Dec), special rituals and daily poojas are conducted. Pilgrims visit the temple to offer prayers, especially during this spiritually significant period.
Other Local Festivals
