Kakkad Ganapathy Temple Thrissur

Kakkad Mahaganapathy Temple is a prominent spiritual center located in Kunnamkulam, Thrissur district. The presiding deities are Lord Mahaganapathy, depicted with his trunk turned to the left, and Lord Shiva in the form of Vettakkorumakan.

The temple also houses sub-deities including Navagrahas, Nagas, Goddess Durga, and Bhadrakali.In 1921, this temple gained cultural prominence when Kakkad Karanavar Manakulam Kunjunni Raja, along with his nephew Mukunda Raja and the renowned poet Mahakavi Vallathol, co-founded Kerala Kalamandalam here.

This marked the beginning of Kathakali performances at the temple, making it widely known both within and beyond Kerala. Special prasada oottu is offered on the Prathishta Day, during Vinayaka Chathurthi, on the occasion of Vettaikaran Pattu, and on the first Friday of every Malayalam month following Nivedyam.

Festivals

The Temple has a number of festivals. The important ones are :

Vinayaka Chathurthi festival in the Malayalam month of Chingam is celebrated with great devotion and grandeur. A unique ritual known as Vettakaran Pattu takes place on the first Saturday of January, where the Komaram breaks 12,008 coconuts in a spectacular ritual.

An eight-day annual festival begins with Kodiyettam on the Thiruvathira star in Meenam and concludes with the grand Pallivetta and Arattu on the eighth day. The festivities include Chakyarkoothu, Ottanthullal, classical dance performances, bhajans, and cultural programs. On the Sunday following Arattu, the local community celebrates Deshapooram, showcasing their collective devotion and festivity.

Prathishta Day is celebrated on Aswathi Nakshatram in the Malayalam month of Kumbham with special rituals and offerings.
