Kadavalloor Sree Rama Temple Thrissur

Kadavalloor Sree Rama Temple, located in Kadavallur, Kerala, is a revered 13th-century Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Rama, an avatar of Vishnu. For nearly 800 years, the temple has served as a prominent center for Vedic studies and manuscript preservation, making it a landmark of spiritual and scholarly importance.

The temple follows a traditional square layout and features several architectural elements including a mukhamandapam, namaskara mandapam, koothambalam, and a temple pond located on its southern side. The main shrine of Rama is enclosed within a Nalambalam.

A remarkable aspect of the temple is its rich wooden carvings, with over 25 intricately designed sculptures adorning various parts of the temple. These carvings are seen on shrine brackets, the gateway, the temple theatre, and the Vedic learning areas, as well as within the two-tiered sanctum sanctorum. The artwork depicts a blend of religious and secular themes, including:

  • Rama Pattabhishekam (coronation of Rama)
  • Ravana abducting Sita
  • Arjuna’s penance
  • Four-armed Shiva, Durga, Brahma, Agastya, and peacocks among others

The temple is renowned for hosting annual competitions in Vedic chanting and Ramayana recitation, attracting scholars and devotees alike. It is also a venue for traditional Indian classical art performances, keeping alive the cultural and spiritual legacy of the region.
