Chemmanthatta Mahadeva Temple in Thrissur is an ancient Kerala style Shiva temple famous for its sacred lingam, historic murals, and serene temple pond.

Chemmanthatta Mahadeva Temple, nestled in the quiet village of Chemmanthatta in Thrissur district of Kerala, is a serene and ancient temple famed for its mythological, architectural, and spiritual heritage. According to local tradition, the idol of Lord Shiva enshrined there was installed by Parashurama the legendary avatar of Vishnu making it part of the revered group of 108 Shiva temples of Kerala.

The temple’s origin is wrapped in both faith and folklore while one belief says the linga was consecrated by Parashurama, another tradition holds that the deity is “swayambhoo” (self‑manifested), underscoring the sanctity and mystical aura associated with the place. Historically, the temple was once a “Mahakshetram” a grand and major shrine. Over time, its administration passed through various “mana” (traditional Brahmin houses). At one point, the temple was under the control of nine manas. Eventually, it came under the supervision of the local community, now the temple is administered by the Urayma Devasom Board along with the local committee Kshethrakshema Samithi Chemmanthatta.

Festivals

The Temple has a number of festivals. The important ones are :

Annual Festival
The temple’s main yearly festival begins with Kodiyettam on the day of Uthrattathi Nakshatra in the Malayalam month of Meenam (which corresponds roughly to March–April).

Prathishta Dinam
The temple commemorates its consecration / installation day annually on Chithira Nakshatra in the Malayalam month Mithunam. This day is observed with appropriate religious rituals and worship.

Maha Shivaratri
On this day, devotees gather for special worship of Lord Shiva, night‑long vigils, prayers, and special offerings. It is a time for intense devotion and spiritual observance.
