Punarpratishta Varshikam at Vazhamuttam Sree Mahavishnu Temple, Pathanamthitta is one of the most revered and spiritually significant festivals in the region. This annual celebration marks the re-consecration anniversary of the temple and is observed with deep devotion, traditional rituals and a vibrant display of Kerala’s rich cultural heritage.
Devotees from across the district and neighboring regions gather to participate in the festivities seeking the blessings of Lord Mahavishnu and immersing themselves in the spiritual ambiance of the temple.
The festival begins with early morning devotional chanting known as Harinama Keerthanam where groups of devotees sing the names and glories of Lord Vishnu creating an atmosphere of divine serenity. This is followed by Ganapathi Homam, a sacred fire ritual invoking Lord Ganesha for the removal of obstacles and the smooth conduct of the programs. The recitation of the Bhagavatha Purana forms a central part of the festival with devotees listening attentively to the sacred stories and teachings which enhance their spiritual knowledge and devotion.
A highlight of the celebration is the Kalashapuja and Kalashabhishekam performed under the guidance of the temple’s chief Thantri. This is accompanied by Chenda Melam, the traditional percussion ensemble of Kerala which energizes the temple premises and adds grandeur to the rituals. The festival also includes Annadanam, the offering of food to devotees emphasizing the spirit of generosity and community service that is integral to temple traditions.
In the evening, the temple comes alive with devotional bhajans, Deeparadhana and cultural performances that reflect Kerala’s classical art forms. Devotees also participate in the Niramala and other offerings demonstrating their reverence and love for the deity.
