Thiruvutsavam at Thrikkaviyoor Mahadeva Temple is a vibrant and spiritually enriching festival celebrated with great devotion and grandeur. Scheduled from January 2 to 11, 2026, the ten day event draws devotees from across Kerala and beyond offering a unique blend of religious rituals, traditional art forms and cultural programs.
The temple under the Travancore Devaswom Board is dedicated to Lord Shiva and also houses shrines for Parvati, Hanuman and Vishnu making it a significant center of worship in Pathanamthitta.
The festival begins with the ceremonial Kodiyettam marking the auspicious commencement of the celebrations. Each day is filled with meticulously performed rituals, including Narayaneyam recitations, offering of lamps and traditional poojas. The sacred Aarattu ceremony performed at the riverbank is the highlight of the festival accompanied by rhythmic Chenda melam and melodious Nadaswaram performances that create an atmosphere of divine splendor.
Devotional and cultural performances are a major attraction during the festival. Thiruvathira and Kaikottikali dances performed by various local troupes, showcase Kerala’s classical and folk dance heritage. The festival also features Mohiniyattam, Bharatanatyam and Kathakali along with musical evenings presenting a fusion of traditional instruments and contemporary melodies. Other folk art forms like Velakali, Ottanthullal, and Chakyar Koothu engage devotees and spectators, keeping alive the temple’s artistic legacy.
Special arrangements for devotees include Sreebali offerings, prasadam distribution and participation in ritual processions. The festival’s evenings are illuminated with spectacular Prakashavismayam (lighting displays), adding visual grandeur to the spiritual experience. Renowned artists, local performers and temple committees come together to ensure that the celebrations are both vibrant and organized, emphasizing devotion, tradition, and cultural richness.
Thiruvutsavam also fosters social and spiritual learning. Devotees especially children and youth, learn about temple rituals, discipline, and the rich heritage of Kerala’s devotional arts.
