Uthram Mahotsavam at Pandalam Mahadeva Temple, Pathanamthitta is one of the most revered and vibrant temple festivals in Kerala celebrated with deep devotion, rich traditions and grand cultural displays.
The festival is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the presiding deity of the temple and holds immense spiritual significance for devotees from across the state and beyond. It is a time when the entire temple and surrounding areas come alive with a combination of religious rituals, artistic performances and communal participation.
The festival begins with sacred rituals that include Thiruvabharana Chartham, the ceremonial bringing of the deity’s sacred ornaments followed by Kalabhabhishekam, a ritualistic bathing of the idol with sanctified substances. Devotees also witness elaborate poojas such as Ashtadravya Ganapati Homam offerings of Chathushshata Nivedyam and traditional worship sequences like Uchappattu and Deeparadhana.
The spiritual atmosphere is further enriched by Sopanam Sangeetham, the soulful temple music performed at the steps of the sanctum sanctorum and other devotional songs that accompany various rituals.
Apart from religious ceremonies, the festival is also marked by vibrant cultural programs including Velakali, a traditional martial art performance, Kalamezhuthu, the artistic depiction of the deity on the floor and Nayattu Vili, the ceremonial call of the hunters. The evenings are illuminated with Deepakazhcha, a spectacular lamp procession and Vilakkinezunellathu creating a mesmerizing visual and spiritual experience for all attendees.
The festival is also an occasion for the community to come together with devotees participating in Uthrasadya, a grand temple feast which fosters a sense of togetherness and devotion.
