The March Month Pooja at Sabarimala Temple, located in Pathanamthitta, Kerala is one of the most important religious observances for devotees of Lord Ayyappa.
Celebrated during the Meena Maasa, this festival attracts thousands of pilgrims from all over India, who come to seek the blessings of Lord Ayyappa. The temple is renowned for its rigorous traditions, spiritual atmosphere and sacred rituals making it a significant pilgrimage center in South India.
The month long observances begin with special poojas and rituals that are carefully scheduled throughout the day. Devotees participate in daily worship, abhishekam and archana.

In addition to the regular poojas, the festival period also includes Mandala Vratham, a 48 day period of austerity and devotion observed by devotees before the main festival. During Mandala Vratham, devotees follow strict dietary rules, maintain celibacy and engage in spiritual practices to purify the body and mind. The Kodiyettu marks the official commencement of the festive activities symbolizing the start of the divine celebration at the temple.
The March Utsavam, a key highlight of this period includes special evening poojas and elaborate rituals culminating in the Ayyappa Birthday celebrations which are observed with grandeur and devotion. The festival is also an occasion for cultural expressions including devotional music, traditional drumming and community participation, reflecting the rich heritage of Kerala’s temple traditions.
