Thiruvutsavam at Punnamthottam Sree Durga Bhagavathi Mahakshetram, Pathanamthitta is a vibrant and spiritually enriching festival celebrated with great devotion and grandeur.
The temple dedicated to Goddess Durga Bhagavathi is historically significant and revered as the abode of the local deity considered the sister of the Thiruvaaranmula Thampuran.
Devotees from across Kerala gather here to seek the blessings of the Goddess participating in a series of elaborate rituals, devotional activities and cultural programs that mark this annual celebration.
The festival begins with the Thrikodiyettam, a sacred ritual signaling the commencement of the festivities. Throughout the festival, the temple comes alive with Harinaama Keerthanam, the chanting of the Lord’s names and Sahasranama Japam, the recitation of a thousand divine names creating an atmosphere of divine energy and devotion. Daily Bhagavatha Parayanam sessions are conducted where sacred texts are recited with devotion attracting scholars and devotees alike.

Annadanam is arranged daily, feeding hundreds of devotees as an act of piety and charity. The festival also features a rich cultural program including Kathakali performances, Tholpavakuthu, Thiruvathira, Bharatanatyam and other classical and folk art forms showcasing Kerala’s traditional heritage.
The concluding ritual, Aarattu is a grand ceremonial procession where the deity is taken for a holy bath, accompanied by musical ensembles like Panchari Melam and Thalappoli. Devotees actively participate in this procession, offering lamps, rice baskets and other offerings along the route creating a scene of devotional fervor.
