Thiruvutsavam is the most anticipated annual festival at Poothankara Sree Dharmasastha Temple, one of the revered spiritual centers in Pathanamthitta district. The festival is a vibrant celebration of devotion, culture and community attracting devotees from across Kerala and beyond.
This sacred event is dedicated to Lord Dharmasastha, a deity revered for his protective and benevolent qualities and the temple comes alive with a series of rituals, homams and cultural programs during the festival period.
The festival traditionally begins with Kodiyet marking the auspicious commencement of the celebrations. Devotees participate in elaborate poojas including the Aayilyam Pooja and other special offerings seeking the blessings of the deity for health, prosperity and spiritual upliftment.
One of the main highlights is the Chathushathapayasam Mahanevedyam, a grand offering of sweet rice pudding prepared with devotion and care symbolizing the prosperity and unity of the community.
Another key ritual is the Mahamrityunjaya Homam, a powerful fire ritual performed to ward off negative energies, ensure protection and promote well being. The Pallivetta, a symbolic divine hunt is celebrated with great enthusiasm followed by Aarattu, the ceremonial holy bath of the deity in a nearby river or sacred water body. These rituals are accompanied by traditional music, percussion ensembles and devotional singing creating a deeply spiritual and immersive experience for all attendees.
