Meena Bharani Mahotsavam is one of the most significant annual festivals celebrated at the sacred Panayannarkavu Sree Bhagavathy Temple. Dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy, the presiding deity of the temple, this grand festival is observed with deep devotion and vibrant traditional celebrations.
The temple which has a rich spiritual and historical legacy spanning several centuries attracts thousands of devotees who gather to seek the blessings of the divine mother during this auspicious occasion.
The festival marks the sacred celebration associated with the divine presence of Bhagavathy and reflects the strong cultural and religious traditions of Kerala’s temple festivals. During the Mahotsavam, the temple premises become a center of devotion and festive energy as various Tantric rituals, special poojas and ceremonial offerings are performed according to traditional temple customs. Devotees participate in prayers, recitations of sacred texts and special rituals conducted by the temple priests.
One of the major highlights of the festival is the grand temple procession where the idol of the Goddess is ceremonially taken out in a majestic Ezhunnallathu accompanied by traditional percussion ensembles such as chenda melam and other temple instruments. Majestic elephants decorated with traditional ornaments and umbrellas add to the splendor of the procession creating a magnificent spectacle for devotees and visitors alike.
Another unique feature of the festival is the colorful Kettukazhcha, a traditional temple procession that includes beautifully crafted effigies, decorated structures, floats and cultural displays representing the rich artistic heritage of Kerala. The celebration also includes various cultural programs such as devotional music, classical dance performances, folk arts and drama which are organized as part of the temple festivities.
Annadanam is also conducted during the festival, offering food to devotees and visitors as an act of devotion and service. The festival concludes with the sacred Aarattu ceremony where the idol of the Goddess is taken to a nearby water body for the ceremonial holy bath symbolizing purification and divine blessings.
