Padayani is celebrated to pay obeisance to Goddess Bhadrakali and is a ritualistic art form. Thelliyoor is rich with the presence of Devi Thelliyoor Kavillama. History says that it was a Kavu (forest attached to the temple) in which the snakes monkeys, etc. lived, The thelliyur kavu Padayani is one of the famous
festivals in Pathanamthitta district.
The temple which is the abode of "Maa Kaali" is famous for Padayani
(folk art form), Chooral Adavi and Daarushilpams. The temple has been in existence for the past 1000
years and ancient form of writing is available on the touch stones carved out from hard rock. The main
deity is Sree Bhadra, an incarnation of of Durga. The word "Thelliyoor" denotes the land of the. The 41
days of 'Kalamezhuthupattu' conducted elaborately at the 'Pattambalam' within the Temple premises is
also a traditional event that draws a large crowd. The shrine has a natural lake on top of the mountain
near it.

Padayani is celebrated at the shrine to pay obeisance to Thelliyooramma. Special prayers and ritualistic offerings are made at the shrine to please the Goddess and seek her blessings. Adavi is observed on the seventh day with villagers gathering at the Pattambalam for Malayuttu. It is a
first step of Adavi by Velan. As part of the ritualistic event, sixty eight coconuts are broken one after the other. This is followed by devotees covering themselves in Chooral, a kind of thorny cane and rolling themselves over it. The blood that oozes from the wounds are believed to be the offering
to the Goddess. The festival is an exhibit of the unique ways of worship of Goddess Bhadrakali, the presiding deity of the shrine.
