The Orippurathu Bhagavathi Temple, located in the serene surroundings of Thattayil in Pathanamthitta district, Kerala, is renowned for its annual Thiruvutsavam a grand festival celebrated with immense devotion, traditional rituals and cultural vibrancy.The 2026 festival spans six days coinciding with the auspicious days of Ashwathi, Bharani, Karthika, and Thiruvathira according to the Malayalam calendar. This festival is dedicated to Ponnorippurathamma, the presiding deity revered as the giver of all auspiciousness and blessings.
Each day of the festival is meticulously planned with a series of traditional rituals and ceremonies that attract devotees from across Kerala and beyond. The mornings start with Prabhathabheri, the ceremonial drum followed by Nirmalyadarshanam and Abhishekam allowing devotees to witness the deity in its divine form. Ushahpuja and Bhagavatam Parayanam enhance the spiritual atmosphere while elaborate Kalamezhuthu and Ottanthullal performances bring alive Kerala’s rich artistic heritage.
A highlight of the festival is the Kettukazhcha, a spectacular procession of elaborately decorated structures and effigies brought in by different Karas. The grandeur of the procession combined with rhythmic Panchari Melams, Panchavadyam ensembles and Nadaswaram music creates an unforgettable visual and auditory experience for all attendees. Evenings feature Deeparadhana, devotional music and Thiruvathira performances while the night culminates with epic musical dramas and vibrant cultural displays.
The festival also encourages community participation through offerings, charitable contributions and temple sponsored events like Annadanam. Special stalls provide devotees with photos of the deity, traditional lamps and ritual items. The Thiruvutsavam is not only a spiritual celebration but also a cultural landmark that preserves and showcases Kerala’s rich temple arts, music and traditional practices making it an unmissable experience for devotees and tourists alike.
