The Thiruvutsavam festival at Nannoor Devi Temple in Pathanamthitta is one of the most vibrant and spiritually uplifting celebrations in Kerala drawing devotees from far and wide. This festival is dedicated to the divine Mother Goddess, and it is celebrated with a rich blend of traditional rituals, devotional offerings and cultural programs that highlight Kerala’s age old temple traditions.
The festivities begin with the Kodiyettam which marks the formal start of the Thiruvutsavam and is accompanied by devotional chants and traditional music. The temple premises come alive with colorful decorations, the fragrance of incense and the sound of melam and other percussion instruments. One of the most anticipated events is the Parakkezhunnallath, a magnificent elephant procession where beautifully adorned elephants accompanied by priests and devotees carry the deity through the temple grounds creating a mesmerizing spectacle of devotion and grandeur.
Another central part of the festival is the Pongala, a ritual where women devotees cook a special offering in earthen pots as an expression of their devotion and gratitude to the Goddess. This offering is considered highly sacred and is believed to bring prosperity, health and protection to the devotees and their families.
The festival also includes the Mukoot Anpol, a ceremonial crowning of the deity symbolizing the divine power and majesty of the Goddess. The grand celebration concludes with the Thiru Aarattu, a holy bath ritual for the deity, accompanied by prayers, music and the enthusiastic participation of devotees signifying the completion of the spiritual and cultural festivities.
