Karthika Pongala is one of the most vibrant and auspicious festivals celebrated at Koodal Sree Devi Temple in Pathanamthitta, Kerala. This festival is dedicated to Goddess Devi and holds immense religious significance for devotees especially women who gather in large numbers to offer the traditional Pongala ritual.
The festival falls in the Malayalam month of Makaram, on the day of the star Karthika, which is considered highly sacred and ideal for performing religious observances.
During Karthika Pongala, women devotees prepare a special offering called Pongala, a sweet rice dish cooked with jaggery, coconut and cardamom in earthen pots. This ritual is performed as an expression of devotion seeking the blessings of the Goddess for prosperity, well being and the fulfillment of personal desires. The temple and its surrounding areas are transformed into a vibrant and festive space with hundreds of participants setting up temporary stoves and cooking their offerings in the open creating a sense of community and shared devotion.
