Thiruvutsavam at Ayroor Puthiyakavu Devi Temple is one of the most significant religious festivals in Pathanamthitta, attracting devotees from across Kerala and beyond. Celebrated over ten days, the festival combines traditional rituals, cultural performances and devotional offerings creating a vibrant and spiritual atmosphere around the temple premises.
Devotees actively participate in the various poojas, homams and ceremonial events seeking blessings from Goddess Bhadrakali for prosperity, health and protection from negativity.
The festival begins with Palliyunarthal, the ritual awakening of the deity,followed by Nirmalya Darshan where devotees have the opportunity to view sacred offerings from the previous day. Special poojas such as Ganapathi Homam, Lalitha Sahasranama Japa, and other rituals are conducted in the morning. The recitation of Narayaneeya forms a central spiritual activity during the festival led by local devotional groups creating a deeply meditative environment.
Afternoons are often filled with cultural performances, including traditional dances like Thiruvathira, Kuchelavritham and Ottanthullal presented by trained artists from Kerala’s renowned cultural academies. Children from the temple’s Balagokulam perform devotional art programs while music enthusiasts enjoy performances on the violin, mridangam, thavil, and nadaswaram. Special offerings such as Kaazhcha Sreebali, Deepa Aradhana and flower decorations enhance the visual and spiritual appeal of the temple during this time.
The festival reaches its pinnacle with the Aarattu, the ceremonial holy bath of the deity accompanied by a grand procession through neighboring villages. Panchavadyam, traditional Kerala orchestra performances and a display of lamps make the event spectacular. Every evening, special devotional concerts, satsangs and night time rituals conclude the day on a divine note.
