Hanumad Jayanthi Mahotsavam & Sahasra Avil Pongala celebrated at the Panchamukha Hanuman Temple Chengara is one of the most spiritually significant and vibrant devotional festivals observed by devotees of Lord Hanuman in the region.
The temple dedicated to Panchamukha Hanuman the five faced form of Lord Hanuman symbolizing immense power, protection, wisdom, devotion, and victory over evil becomes a center of intense spiritual activity during this sacred celebration.
The festival is organized by the Chengara Anjaneya Seva Trust which coordinates various religious rituals, devotional gatherings and cultural events as part of the celebration. Devotees from nearby villages and distant places visit the temple in large numbers to participate in the sacred rituals and seek the blessings of Lord Hanuman.
One of the most important highlights of the festival is the Sahasra Avil Pongala, a special offering where devotees prepare sacred offerings made from flattened rice as a symbol of devotion and gratitude to Lord Hanuman. This ritual represents humility, faith and surrender to the divine. Hundreds of devotees take part in this offering creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere around the temple premises.
The festival also includes several traditional temple rituals such as Ganapathi Homam, special poojas and recitations of sacred texts like the Bhagavata Parayanam. These rituals are performed by priests to invoke divine blessings for peace, prosperity and protection for devotees and the community.
Another important part of the celebration is the Kodimaram Ghoshayatra and Thrikodiyettu, the ceremonial procession and flag hoisting that symbolically mark the commencement of the festivities. The temple premises resonate with devotional chants, traditional percussion instruments and the vibrant participation of devotees.
In addition to the spiritual rituals, the festival also features cultural programs, devotional music performances and community gatherings that reflect the rich temple traditions of Kerala. Annadanam, the sacred distribution of food to devotees is an important aspect of the celebration and reflects the temple’s spirit of service and generosity.
The festival concludes with traditional ceremonies such as Deepakazhcha and Jeevitha Ezhunnellathu creating a visually captivating and spiritually uplifting experience for devotees.
