This temple is of great spiritual importance as it is the first major temple that devotees encounter on their trek from Pampa to Sannidhanam, the sanctum of Lord Ayyappa in Sabarimala. A long-standing tradition for Sabarimala pilgrims is to carry an extra coconut, specifically to be broken at this shrine before beginning their ascent to the sacred hill. This act of breaking the coconut symbolizes the removal of obstacles and is a prayer for a safe and successful pilgrimage. Lord Ganesha, revered as Vighneswara, the remover of obstacles, is invoked here to bless the journey ahead. In front of the temple lies the Aarattu Kadavu, a holy riverbank that holds immense ritual significance. It is at this site that the utsava murti (festival idol) of Lord Ayyappa from Sannidhanam is brought for ceremonial purification during the annual 10-day Sabarimala festival, held between March and April in the Malayalam month of Meenam. This ritual, known as the Aarattu, marks the culmination of the festival and is attended by thousands of devotees and temple authorities. Following the Aarattu, the idol of Lord Ayyappa is ceremoniously taken to the Namaskara Mandapam of the Pampa Ganapathy Temple. Here, devotees perform Nirapara, a traditional offering where grains and coconut are presented in overflowing measurement, symbolizing abundance, gratitude, and devotion. This moment offers pilgrims a rare and sacred opportunity to witness and participate in the direct worship of Lord Ayyappa outside the main Sannidhanam.
