Vilayannur Mahotsavam is the grand annual festival of Vilayannur Sree Maruthi Bhagavathi Temple, one of the spiritually vibrant temples in Palakkad district. Dedicated to Goddess Maruthi Bhagavathi, revered as Adi Parashakthi and the compassionate Mother who protects her devotees, this Mahotsavam is a magnificent celebration of devotion, tradition and Kerala’s rich temple heritage.
The highlight of the festival is the sacred Kummatti Maholsavam, which brings together devotees, artists and temple communities in an atmosphere filled with faith and festivity. The celebrations begin with traditional temple rituals and continue with a series of spiritual and cultural programmes conducted in strict accordance with temple customs and tantric traditions. The temple premises come alive with the sounds of Panchavadyam, Pandimelam, Thayambaka and other classical percussion ensembles that reflect the grandeur of Kerala’s ritual art forms.
Devotional ceremonies such as Ganapathi Homam, Abhishekam, Alankara Pooja, Kalashabhishekam, and Bhagavathi Seva form the spiritual core of the festival. The Prathishta observances are conducted under the guidance of the temple Tantri, ensuring adherence to sacred traditions. Annadanam (community feast) is offered to devotees symbolizing sharing, unity and divine grace.
The festival is also renowned for its vibrant cultural evenings featuring Ottanthullal, Chakyar Koothu, classical dance performances, Sopana Sangeetham, devotional music concerts and Ganamela. The majestic Vela procession, accompanied by caparisoned elephants and powerful percussion ensembles, adds ceremonial splendor to the celebrations. The grand fireworks display marks a visually spectacular culmination of the festivities.
