Tholpavakoothu is a unique and ancient form of shadow puppetry performed at the Sree Pariyanampatta Bhagavathi Temple in Palakkad, Kerala. This traditional art form which literally translates to “leather puppet play” has been a significant part of Kerala’s cultural and devotional heritage for centuries. The festival is held as an offering to the Goddess Bhagavathi and is closely associated with temple rituals and ceremonies often conducted in the sanctum during special occasions and temple festivals.
The performance involves intricately carved leather puppets usually depicting characters from the epic Ramayana. These puppets are carefully manipulated behind a backlit white screen, creating enchanting shadows that bring the ancient stories to life. Each performance is accompanied by traditional percussion instruments like the chenda, maddalam and elathalam, alongside vocal narrations that explain the episodes of the Ramayana to the audience. The synchronization of music, narration and puppetry requires exceptional skill and has been passed down through generations of skilled artisans.
