Srimad-Bhagavatam Saptaham at Thiruvegappura
For nearly 50 years, the Srīmad-Bhāgavatam Saptaham has been held annually in the Koothambalam of Thiruvegappura Temple without interruption. Initiated by the devout Kolpuram Namboothiri, this sacred tradition has since seen the participation of many devoted Bhagavata reciters. A unique highlight of the Saptaham is the daily Kalam drawing a traditional Kerala ritual art form. Each evening, a skilled artist creates a new Kalam, tailored to that day's pooja. These intricate drawings are erased after the rituals, symbolizing impermanence. The seamless integration of Kalam art with the temple’s daily worship is a rare and cherished practice. Saptaham continues to spread the message of the Srimad Bhagavatam across India, nurturing devotion and tradition. To ensure a fulfilling spiritual experience, three meals a day are lovingly provided to all devotees throughout the entire week.
Ashtami – The Sacred Finale of Srimad Bhagavata Saptaham
Ashtami day marks the powerful conclusion of the Srīmad Bhāgavata Saptaham at Thiruvegappura Temple. On this day, a deeply symbolic and sacred ritual called Villakku is performed, culminating in the Ajyahuti Yajna, a rare and spiritually intense fire ritual. A highlight of this ceremony is the Abhishekam of the Shivalingam with 10 litres of pure ghee, which is then channeled directly into the large Havan located on the northern side of Lord Shiva’s shrine without ever touching the ground. This precise and symbolic act signifies the seamless offering from the divine to the divine, enhancing the sanctity and energy of the space. Ashtami rituals offer a powerful closure to the week-long recitation of the Bhagavatam, uniting devotion, fire, and divine presence in a rare and unforgettable spiritual experience.
Utsava – The Grand Annual Festival of Thiruvegappura Temple
Utsava at Thiruvegappura Temple begins a few days after Shivaratri, during the month of Kumbham (February–March), and is one of the temple’s most vibrant and spiritually charged celebrations. The festival opens with the hoisting of three flags, one before each principal deity Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Sankaranarayana. This sacred act not only marks the beginning of the Utsava but also symbolizes the awakening of Kundalini energy. Spanning eight days, the Utsava transforms the temple and village into a center of divine celebration, filled with music, singing, and the sounds of devotion. The village sidewalks come alive, echoing with performances of traditional temple arts, including classical music, dance, and ritual theatre.
Daily Annadhanam ensures that all devotees are fed, reinforcing the temple's role as a space of spiritual and communal nourishment. A major highlight is Pallivetta, the divine hunt, symbolizing the destruction of evil. Following this symbolic act, the Panchavadyam ensemble plays, gradually leading the festive rhythm to rest. On the final day, a sacred procession moves toward the western riverbank, accompanied by devotional singing and joyful celebration, marking the return of the deities and the devotees’ hearts to peace and unity. Throughout the entire period from Shivaratri to the final day the temple's inner sanctum is sanctified through elaborate Tantric rituals, preserving the spiritual intensity of this divine festival.
