Vela Mahotsavam at Sree Thazhakkottukavu Bhagavathi Temple, Palakkad is one of the most vibrant and eagerly awaited temple festivals in Kerala.
Celebrated with great devotion and grandeur, this festival honors the presiding deity, Goddess Bhagavathi who is revered as the divine protector of the community. The temple located in the Thekkethara region of Palakkad becomes a hub of spiritual energy, cultural expression and social gathering during the festival period.
The festival is marked by a variety of traditional rituals and ceremonies that begin early in the morning with elaborate poojas and abhishekams. Devotees from nearby villages and distant places flock to the temple to participate in these sacred rites, offering prayers, flowers and other offerings to seek the blessings of the Goddess. The ambiance of the temple is further enhanced by the rhythmic sounds of traditional instruments like chenda, ilathalam and edakka creating a deeply immersive devotional atmosphere.
One of the highlights of the Vela Mahotsavam is the spectacular fireworks display which draws large crowds and is considered a symbol of celebration and prosperity.
