Chinakkathoor Pooram is one of the most spectacular and culturally rich festivals in Kerala, celebrated with grandeur at Erakkottiri Sri Ayyappan Temple in Palakkad. The festival marks the beginning of the festive season from the first day of Uttarayanam and is dedicated to the goddess Bhagavathi, bringing together devotees, local communities and cultural enthusiasts from across the region.
The festival is renowned for its vibrant Aanapooram, where beautifully decorated elephants depart from Erakkottiri Sri Ayyappan Temple, passing through the village and local landmarks ultimately reaching the Chinakkathoor Maidan. The elephants are adorned with traditional caparisons, bells, and parasols, creating a mesmerizing spectacle that attracts thousands of devotees.
>br>Panchavadyam, the traditional orchestra of Kerala forms an integral part of the festival filling the air with rhythmic beats of drums and wind instruments. Alongside, Kuthirakali, Kalamezhuthu Pattu and other classical art forms enliven the celebrations reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the region.
Erakkottiri Desam plays a pivotal role in organizing and leading the festival, with support from neighboring Desams including Kuthampulli, Paramelpadi, Mayannur, Kondazhi, and Thiruvillamal. The cooperation of local residents and devotees ensures that the festival is celebrated with devotion, harmony and grandeur.
The festival spans several days, starting with preparatory rituals, Kalameluthu Pattu, Tholpav Koothu and culminating in the main Pooram day on 2nd March 2026, followed by Kummatti Day and post-Pooram events. The temple also hosts pre Pooram performances such as Double Thayambaka showcasing the musical expertise of local families and traditional artists.
