Devikku Pongala at Ariyoor Sree Pisharikkal Bhagavathi Temple, Palakkad is one of the most revered and vibrant temple festivals in Kerala, celebrated with deep devotion and cultural grandeur. The festival is dedicated to the Goddess Bhagavathi, the presiding deity of the temple who is worshipped as the embodiment of power, protection and benevolence.
Devotees from across Palakkad and neighboring districts gather in large numbers to participate in this sacred ritual creating a spiritually charged atmosphere around the temple premises.
The central highlight of the festival is the Pongala offering, a unique ritual where women devotees cook a special sweet dish made of rice, jaggery, coconut and other traditional ingredients in earthen pots as an offering to the Goddess. This act of devotion is believed to bring prosperity, protection, and divine blessings to the devotees and their families. The temple grounds come alive with the aroma of the offerings, the rhythm of traditional percussion instruments and the chants of prayers and hymns dedicated to the Goddess.
The festival also includes important Vedic and ritualistic ceremonies such as Ganapathi Homam, Kalasha Abhishekam, Navakumbham and Panchagavya offerings. These rituals are conducted by the temple priests with meticulous care following ancient customs and traditions that have been passed down through generations. The sacred fire lighting, nivedyam and annadanam are other integral parts of the celebrations reflecting both the spiritual and social dimensions of the festival.
