Nenmara Vela is one of the most spectacular and eagerly awaited temple festivals in Kerala celebrated with unmatched grandeur in the Palakkad district. The festival is dedicated to Bhagavathi, the presiding deity of the Nellikulangara Temple and showcases the region’s rich cultural and religious traditions.
Every year, thousands of devotees and tourists gather to witness this vibrant celebration, which highlights the deep devotion of the local community and their enthusiasm for preserving Kerala’s traditional art forms.
A central attraction of the festival is the elephant procession where dozens of beautifully decorated elephants adorned with golden headgear bells, colorful parasols and garlands participate in a mesmerizing parade. These elephants carry the idol of the goddess, creating a divine and majestic spectacle. Accompanying them are rhythmic chenda melam and panchavadyam performances which fill the air with energy and excitement, captivating everyone present.
The festival is also famous for its competitive fireworks a highlight that draws large crowds. Villagers from Nenmara and nearby Kollengode engage in a friendly yet intense display of pyrotechnics lighting up the night sky in a dazzling show of colors and patterns.
