The Manappullikkavu Vela is one of the most celebrated temple festivals in Palakkad held annually at the Sree Manappullikkavu Bhagavathy Devaswom Temple. This vibrant festival draws devotees and tourists alike showcasing Kerala’s rich cultural heritage and devotion to the Goddess Bhagavathy.
Preparations for the festival begin well in advance, with devotees and temple committees organizing art performances, music recitals and folk dances. The festival features Panchavadyam, a traditional orchestra involving five types of instruments which resonates throughout the temple grounds and surrounding areas. Other musical and dance performances include Chakyar Koothu, Thiruvathira Kali and Thayambaka offering a perfect blend of devotional music and cultural entertainment.
A central attraction of the Vela is the procession of the deity, accompanied by 15 majestic elephants adorned with decorative caparisons. The procession is enhanced with rhythmic drum beats, traditional Nadaswaram music and spectacular fireworks creating a mesmerizing experience for all attendees. Alongside the religious rituals there are cultural programs, devotional singing competitions and community feasts where hundreds of devotees are offered prasadam.
Manappullikkavu Vela also plays a significant role in preserving Kerala’s traditional art forms while fostering community participation. It is a festival where spirituality and culture merge offering an immersive experience that highlights the devotion, artistry and communal harmony of Palakkad.
