കുനിശ്ശേരി കുമ്മാട്ടി 2026 ശ്രീ പൂക്കുളങ്ങര ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം പാലക്കാട് | Kunissery Kummatty 2026 Sree Pookkulangara Bhagavathy Temple Palakkad
The Kunissery Kummatti Mahotsavam, celebrated at the historic Sree Pookkulangara Bhagavathy Temple in Palakkad is one of Kerala’s most vibrant and culturally profound folk festivals. More than just a local celebration, it is a grand tapestry of mythology, martial history and deep rooted devotion that transforms the village of Kunissery into a theatre of divine energy.
The festival is dedicated to the presiding deity, Pookkulangara Bhagavathy, a powerful manifestation of the Divine Mother who is believed to be the guardian and protector of the region.
The essence of the festival lies in its unique blend of "Tanima" and community spirit. Historically, the festival is linked to the legendary Mamankam traditions and the valorous history of the region. It is said to commemorate a time when the pride and might of earthly rulers bowed in complete surrender before the supreme cosmic power of the Goddess. This sense of historical pride is palpable in the rituals especially the Thalavettikkali, a rhythmic and energetic folk performance that echoes the martial spirit of ancient Kerala.
One of the most visually stunning aspects of the festival is the Kummatti itself the colorful mask dance where performers wear masks carved from the wood of the Alstonia scholaris tree and adorn themselves with skirts made of long grass. As they dance to the hypnotic rhythms of traditional percussion, they bring to life various mythological characters. The air vibrates with the sound of the Pandi Melam, a majestic ensemble of drums, cymbals and horns often led by the finest masters of the craft.
A unique cultural cornerstone of the Kunissery Kummatti is the reverence shown to the women of the land who are traditionally venerated as living embodiments of the Goddess during the festivities. From the "Mandu Muzhakkal" to the grand "Valum Chilambum Ezhunnallikkal", every moment of the festival is a testament to the enduring power of faith and the preservation of Kerala's rich intangible heritage. It remains a spectacular display of North Malabar’s cultural identity drawing thousands of devotees and art lovers to witness the divine dance of tradition.
