Cherunetturi Vela Mahotsavam is one of the most vibrant and majestic temple festivals celebrated at Sree Cherunetturi Bhagavathi Sahayam in Palakkad.
This grand festival honors the goddess Bhadrakali who is revered as the protector of devotees, the shelter of the distressed and the destroyer of evil. With the unity and devotion of the local community, the temple and surrounding areas are beautifully adorned in preparation for the festivities reflecting both cultural richness and spiritual fervor.
The festival is marked by a spectacular procession of elephants including the revered elephant kings of Kerala, each decorated with ornate golden howdahs and colorful ceremonial attire. The elephants are accompanied by traditional Panchavadyam and Melam ensembles filling the air with powerful rhythms and resonant percussion that elevate the festive spirit. Lighting and lamp decorations arranged by local artisans enhance the grandeur of the event creating a mesmerizing visual experience for devotees and visitors alike.
As part of the celebration, devotees participate in the ritual offering of Ponnola and perform ceremonial dances, umbrella exchanges and other traditional art forms. The festival also includes sevenfold plays, Valliyarukal and a wide variety of decorative arrangements all designed to glorify the goddess and inspire devotion. Fireworks and illuminations further enliven the night symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness.
