Legend has it that Vettakkorumakan, the main deity of the temple, is the son of Lord Shiva and his consort Parvathy and was born while Shiva and Parvathy were on a hunting expedition to the forest. He is believed to have become the king of the forest. The annual festival of the Vettakkorumakan Temple is known as Nilambur Pattu Utsavam. The festival is celebrated in the month of Dhanu (January) of the Malayalam calendar. The celebration continues for 6 days and is marked by singing of hymns praising the God, by the Royal Family along with the tribals of Nilambur. As a part of the festival, Sarvani Sadya (food) is distributed by the temple to tribals. The serving of food doesn't stop until the Mooppan (head of the tribals) announces that he and his people are satisfied with the food and that now the serving can be stopped. It is said that on average about 2000 kilos of rice are prepared during the day. Adorned elephants, drums, Komaram (considered as messengers of the God), various cultural programs, etc. are the other highlights of this festival. Many cultural activities take place in the nearby area of temple too. The festival has in present times also extended to a cultural gathering attracting thousands of artistes and lakhs of people.
