The Thalappoli Mahotsavam at Sree Thirumandhamkunnu Bhagavathi Temple, Malappuram is one of the most vibrant and spiritually significant temple festivals in Kerala, celebrated with deep devotion, cultural richness, and traditional grandeur. Dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathi, this annual festival reflects the unique blend of ritual purity and artistic heritage that defines Kerala’s temple traditions.
The festival begins with sacred rituals performed under the guidance of the temple priests, including Ganapathi Homam, Abhishekam and various poojas that invoke divine blessings for prosperity and harmony. One of the most important highlights of the celebration is the Thalappoli procession where women and young girls carry decorated plates with lit lamps, flowers and offerings symbolizing purity, devotion and auspiciousness.
Another major attraction of the festival is the performance of traditional art forms such as Thayambaka, Keli, and Panchavadyam which create a powerful rhythmic atmosphere within the temple premises. The sound of percussion instruments and devotional chants fills the air enhancing the spiritual energy of the occasion. The festival also features majestic elephant processions where the deity is carried in a ceremonial procession accompanied by traditional music and cultural performances.
