The Maha Shivaratri Mahotsavam at Sri Ardhanareeswara Temple in Malappuram is one of the most significant and spiritually uplifting celebrations in the region. This festival is dedicated to Lord Shiva worshipped here in the unique form of Ardhanareeswara symbolizing the divine unity of masculine and feminine energies.
Devotees from across Kerala and neighboring states gather at the temple to witness and participate in the elaborate rituals and cultural events.
The festival day is marked by a series of traditional poojas starting in the evening with devotional performances and art forms that highlight Kerala’s rich cultural heritage. One of the main highlights is the Nrithakala Sandhya, a mesmerizing evening of classical dance and music which creates an atmosphere of devotion and spiritual reflection. As the night progresses, the temple comes alive with chants, hymns and devotional songs dedicated to Lord Shiva.
A special ritual called Dravyabhishekam is performed late at night where sacred substances are offered directly to the deity inside the sanctum. This ritual is unique to this temple and is conducted after the temple water is completely drained symbolizing purity and the devotion of the devotees. Along with Dravyabhishekam, Alankara Pooja or ceremonial decoration of the deity adds grandeur to the celebration making it visually and spiritually captivating.
