Pongala Samarpanam at Payyanad Kappatt Oottu Brahmaswam Sree Karinkali Temple in Malappuram is one of the most revered and eagerly awaited religious festivals in the region.The festival is celebrated with deep devotion and is considered highly auspicious particularly for women who play a central role in the rituals.
The ceremonies will begin early in the morning at 5:15 AM with the Ashtadravya Maha Ganapathi Homa, a sacred fire ritual using eight holy substances conducted under the guidance of the chief priest, Tantri Brahmashri Modappilappally Parameswaran Namboothiripad. This Homa is believed to remove obstacles invoke blessings and ensure the prosperity of both the participants and the community. At 6:30 AM, the fire from the Homa will be transferred to individual Pongala hearths officially marking the start of this year’s Pongala. Women devotees will prepare sweet rice offerings on these hearths using ingredients like rice, jaggery, coconut, ghee and other sacred items following traditional practices passed down through generations.
Pongala is more than a ritual, it is a sacred expression of strength, devotion and nature’s bounty dedicated to the Goddess Mahadevi. The festival also highlights the spirit of community as women from all walks of life come together in collective prayer and celebration.
In addition to its spiritual significance, the festival serves as an occasion to support the welfare and prosperity of the local village.
