The Mandala Kalam festival at Porur Siva Temple in Malappuram is a highly revered period in the temple’s annual calendar, attracting devotees from across the region. This sacred observance takes place during the first twelve days of Vrischika Masam a month considered highly auspicious in the Malayalam calendar. During this period, the temple becomes a hub of spiritual activity with numerous rituals and devotional practices carried out to honor Lord Shiva and other deities associated with the temple.
One of the central rituals performed during this time is the Navaka and Panchagavya Abhisheka a unique offering that combines nine types of sacred grains and five products derived from the cow in a ceremonial bath for the deity. This ritual is believed to cleanse the surroundings, purify the devotees’ hearts, and invoke divine blessings for prosperity, health and spiritual growth. Every day during the Mandala Kalam, the sanctum sanctorum of the temple is beautifully decorated and special prayers are recited by the priests creating an atmosphere of devotion and serenity.
Devotees also participate actively by offering Niramala a decorative garland of flowers during the evening Deeparadhana. This offering symbolizes the devotion, love and gratitude of the devotees toward the deity. The collective chanting of hymns and the rhythmic ringing of temple bells enhance the spiritual ambience making the experience profoundly moving for everyone present.
The festival reaches its peak on the 13th day when the Navaka and Panchagavya Abhisheka is offered specifically to Lord Mahavishnu, marking the culmination of the Mandala Kalam. This day is celebrated with special poojas, elaborate rituals and heightened participation from devotees who come in large numbers to witness the sacred proceedings and receive blessings.
