Thrikkarthika Mahotsavam is the festival of lights at the Kadampuzha Bhagavathy Temple. The temple is sans any
deity unlike other Hindu shrines. However, the divine presence at the temple is associated with Goddess Parvathy (Lord Shiva's consort) who is worshipped in three forms here - Vidya Durga (Saraswathi) in the morning, Vanadurga in twaritha (one who is quick in granting blessings) form (Durga) at noon and Aadi Durga (Mooladurga Lakshmi) in the evening. Legend has it that once while the great Adi Sankaracharya was passing through Kadampuzha, during one of his pilgrimages, he was drawn to a divine aura emanating from a dense undergrowth.
With divine help and deep meditation, he found that the radiance shrunk and finally vanished into a hole on the earth's surface and that the phenomenon was owing to the presence of Goddess Parvathy. The saint performed the
first poojas to the Devi on the day coinciding with Karthika asterism in the Malayalam month of Vrishchikam and Thrikkarthika Mahotsavam is celebrated to commemorate this event. It is also known as Prathishtadinam.

Thrikarthika Mahotsavam falls in the Malayalam calendar month of Vrishchikam. It is a three-day spectacular event
comprising of special poojas and offerings. Annadanam (offering of free food to devotees) is organized on all festival days. Traditional performing arts, music and dance are staged during the festival period. Thousands of devotees throng the shrine to offer prayers and seek the blessings of the Goddess. The festival is marked by the wonderful ritual of lighting of thousands of lamps in the temple premises by devotees.
