Ekadashi Vilakku at Thirunavaya Sree Navamukunda Temple, Malappuram is one of the most vibrant and spiritually significant temple festivals in Kerala. Celebrated with devotion and grandeur, this festival draws devotees from across the region to witness and participate in the rich traditions of the temple.
The festival is centered around Ekadashi, a day considered highly auspicious in Hinduism dedicated to Lord Vishnu and associated with fasting, prayers and devotional rituals.
The celebration at Thirunavaya Sree Navamukunda Temple begins with the Sheeveli, a ceremonial procession of the deity around the temple premises, accompanied by traditional percussion instruments and chants. This is followed by Ottanthullal performances which are classical Kerala art forms combining storytelling, music and dance. The stories often highlight episodes from Indian epics and are presented in an engaging and devotional manner attracting audiences of all ages.
Devotees also participate in Ucha Pooja and offerings such as Navakam and Panchagavya seeking the blessings of the deity for prosperity, health and spiritual growth. Another highlight of the festival is the grand Double Thayambaka, an elaborate percussion performance featuring instruments like chenda, kombu and kuzhal performed by renowned artists from Mamiyoor and Guruvayur creating a mesmerizing rhythmic experience.
The festival also features Deeparadhana, the ceremonial lighting of lamps and a Vilakku Ezunnallippu, a beautiful lamp procession that enhances the spiritual ambiance of the temple. The celebration culminates with Prathista Dinam, a special day marking the consecration and installation of the deity adding to the religious significance of the festival.
