Legend has it that the Bhagavathy deity was brought to Vairangode by the Avvancheri Tambras around 1500 years ago. It is believed that Devi, the sister of Kodungallur Bhagavathy, crossed a river and reached Arvancheri Manaka, where the Tambrakals settled her.
Devotees of the temple, particularly the Arvancheri Tambrakals, have a unique tradition where the goddess supposedly gets up and bows down when they arrive, leading them to refrain from entering the temple.Unlike many other temple festivals in Kerala, the Vairangkot festival does not feature elephants.
